Professor Spyridon Ntougias studied Chemistry at the University of Athens, Greece, and received his Ph.D. in 1999 from the Department of Biological Sciences, Wye College, University of London, UK. He worked as scientific staff at the National Agricultural Research Foundation of Greece (NAGREF) and joined the Department of Environmental Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), as an academic staff member in 2009. He is currently a Professor of Environmental Microbiology at the same Department. He has over 25 years of research experience in applied microbiology, water and wastewater treatment, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, bioengineering, biomass and waste valorization, and microbial interactions. He has participated in numerous international and national research projects—many as Coordinator or Principal Investigator—including EU-(co)funded programs (HORIZON, PRIMA, INTERREG, MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE ACTION, HFRI, Operational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Operational Program Human Resources Development, Education and Lifelong Learning), and others funded by regional authorities. He has published 97 research articles in international scientific journals (H-index: 34; Citations: 3,570 – Google Scholar), 1 book, 4 book chapters, and has contributed to more than 100 international and national conferences.
